Our Little Haley had had a fall recently & hit the back of her head hard onto the tiled floor.
And as expected, she cried real hard so we carried & held her to calm her down. I was trying to look for abnormal behavior or signs which may be symptoms of a bad concussion but she looked okay to me despite the red & heavily teared face. This happened when she’s about to go to bed. We gave her the night feed as usual and she drank them all. She however required us to carry her until she fell asleep that night.
She slept for half an hour before waking up crying, so we had to console her by carrying her again. She managed to fall asleep finally, but will not let my mum out of her sight, so mum had to lie down next to her until she fell deep asleep. I found a bump behind her head & didn’t dare to rub on it for fear of causing more pain to her.
Later on, darling hubby asked if we rubbed gently on the affected area immediately after the fall. His reasoning was that it’ll help by diminishing the rise of the bump. I was surprised by this new discovery hence this blog post today. So here’s calling out to mommies & daddies out there to share your experience which may be similar to ours here.
Here’s another poll to make it easier to share. Please do no hesitate to share more detail in the comment box below cos we (the other mommies & daddies out there) may find your information very useful indeed! Thank you!
Here are a few links which I find very informative regarding handling with head injury & such on babies.

The symptoms of a concussion are 1) sleepiness 2) throwing up among other things. Raeven had that fall (slipped on a ball in preschool, fell backwards, hit the back of her head on the vinyl floor). She was very quiet and then started to throw up in the car. Then she said she wanted to sleep. I was driving and had a hard time trying to keep her awake. She threw up a few more times after that, and once in the hospital emergency room.
I think if it’s a hard enough fall, it’s always better to do a CAT scan, which is hard for a baby because how do u keep her still.
Rubbing the area I’ve not heard of but if it’s a concussion, it won’t make a diff because a concussion = brains were shaken and knocked on the skull.

Hi Asther. Sorry to hear about Haley’s bump. You need to monitor her for 24-72 hours for any sign of concussion – vomiting, drowsiness, etc. As for the swelling, an ice pack should have been applied immediately to minimise the swelling. She is fretful and clingy because of the shock that she had received when she bumped her head. If you still feel worried, do take her to the doctor just to be on the safe side.
[05-01-10 | 10:23 AM]Always keep an ice pack in the freezer. You will also encounter her falling and having her teeth cut her lip which will bleed like crazy and everyone will panic until you see that it’s just a small cut. Have clean towels handy and remember the best medicine – plenty of hugs. Don’t make a lot of fuss or a lot of noise as it will stress her out more. Just hold her tight against you. It will reassure her.

[05-01-10 | 11:48 AM]From what I recalled on First Aid (Red Cresent) are never to rub bumps & bruises. Ice the immediate area asap to reduce blood flow to the area. Under-skin bleeding and fluid accumulation will be reduced as well as the pain. The other thoughts, ditto Lisa’s comments.

[05-01-10 | 4:17 PM]Agree with Lisa. Unfortunately, I think more bumps will come along… nothing personal, just that toddlers are not the steadiest people. Cuddle her as much as possible as she would be rather shaken. And I’d see the doctor if I were unsure. They might send you back home with just a word of advice but at least you’ve covered your basis. And as her mum, you’re doing everything you can for her – carry on the good work!

[05-01-10 | 4:51 PM]well Mikhail had a pretty nasty bump in November….he fell in school. A child was standing on the table and jumped on him. (dont ask me what the child was doinh on the table in the first place!!) The school immediately put an ice pack on the bump. when I picked Mikhail from school he refused to let me out of his sight and was sitting on my lap the entire time… his bump was so huge and he was a bit drowsy so I had to take him to hospital for a scan after getting an opinion from the doctor at a clinic nearby. Lucky for him, it was nothing serious. The swelling went down after a couple of days. But believe me it was one of the most terrifying moments of my life…

lemme try this again, cldnt go thru earlier.. my boys have all had heaps of bumps/bruises. I’ve generally employed the ice pack, a smooch and hug and watch them. thankfully been ok, save the one time j1 fell out of bed but thats another story.
U monitor them, hug them and leave em be
Aloe vera (from plants) are great on cuts etc.
[05-01-10 | 5:36 PM]I have 2 hot-cold packs in my freezer (just in case lol). if you are calm (outwardly), she will learn to pick herself up after a fall (esp once she starts walking) or how to fall without injury (well so to speak).. I know sometimes the oldr folks can get rather err.. dramatic when a fall happens, even if no blood etc, she will gt more nervous and all that if thats a reaction. Kids have to learn to dust themself off etc. Nanti more drama
Wow! TQ so much dear mommies & daddies for sharing with us based on your own experiences with your little ones. I for one has definitely learn a thing or two today.
Keep them coming!

Following from Lisa’s thread, I would suggest you get that hot-cold pack that comes in the form of gel in a pack. Very handy, especially for fever and bumps. Also, sugar is a very good remedy for cut lips, especially when they are starting to learn to walk…. lots of bumps. I ditto on Lisa’s on the lots of hugs….
[06-01-10 | 9:34 PM]I ditto on Angelia’s comments regarding our reaction when they fall. Most importantly is that we do not go “arrgggg!!!!, oh noooooooo!!!!!, etc” that will shock the baby/toddler and they will after that get used to it. Grandparents are the biggest source of such dramatic reactions. Daddies ranks second on that. For Gabby, we watch her fall, we let her pick herself up. So she’s more confident now and in fact, emits less fuss if she falls. She also learns to fall on her bum to soften the fall. Life’s natural airbags for the bottom. In fact, she fell last Sat and bruised and scrapped her fingers, we didn’t know until evening when bathing her! hot-cold pack can buy from pharmacy…. not very expensive.
