A Frightening Week

Personal | 31 July 2006
It has been a terrible week. Darling Francis gave me a big fright of his life recently when he experienced heart palpitation after a sudden jolt up some stairs while in the office. He nonchalantly told us (Peter & myself) over dinner on Tuesday evening that he’s experiencing irregular heartbeat. Immediately my mind went to work, asking him questions & coaxing him to go to the hospital for a check-up that very moment. Luckily darling complied to my pleas so we went together to Subang Jaya Medical Center that very evening after dinner.
We meant to have the irregular heartbeat to be recorded for a later visit to his regular doctor for diagnosis. He’s had this problem a few times way back many years ago (before we dated) but had failed to get it recorded because the symptom lasted only a short time.
While in the emergency ward, we were very surprised when told that darling has to be admitted into the Coronary Care Unit for monitoring overnight. Then it hit me pretty hard that this is going to be worse than we thought.
After moving him to the CCU, dearest Peter sent me home in darling’s car. It was one of the worse night I had to go through alone at home. At this point, we have no knowledge of what’s happening to darling. Surprisingly darling was feeling quite normal that night despite the symptom.

Darling’s heartbeat went back to normal in the next morning at about 8am or so.

He had to go through two types of physical tests namely ‘echo test’ for the heart and a ’stress test’ on a treadmill.

After all that, the doctor decided to give him a home-leave & darling has to return back to the hospital the next day for a final check. He had to go for an angio-scan so the doctor can determine that he’s got no blockages in his bloodstream. Then she’ll be able to prebscribe a medication for him safely.

Back To Normal

Doctor finally explained to us that darling Francis was experiencing a Lone Atrial Fibrillation (LAF) which is not associated with structural heart disease what-so-ever. It’s considered non-life threatening, however, he’s required to take a medication called Sotalol & a kind of aspirin drug to maintain his regular heartbeat & also to avoid blood clots from forming if a long LAF occurs.

Well… I’m not very convinced with the drugs prescribed to him. Maybe because I’m not the sort that likes the idea of being dependant on drugs for a lifetime. Also, after reading some information on Sotalol, I was kinda upset that we were not given a proper briefing about the drug by the doctor. I asked whether this drug will have a side-effect on darling & the doctor told us there will be none. You can imagine how horrified I was when I read about the truth on the net!

Darling will return to the hospital for a follow-up & we’re ready to shower the doctor with many questions about his condition & the drugs presribed to him. I pray that darling Francis can return to a healthier self again soon.
